Tricolorii in Turkey

By: Ian Rose | May 12th, 2008 | No Comments »

Victor Piţurcă and the Tricolorii are in Turkey this week, beginning to train up for the Euros. The only competitive match left on the docket between now and June 9th is the May 22nd friendly with Montenegro. Personally, I would have liked to see a bit harsher of a test, but I guess the fact that the Montenegrans beat Norway in their last match makes this one seem a little less of a throw away. Missing from the squad, despite being done with his club season, is Adrian Mutu, who is at home with his wife expecting the birth of their second child. No word yet on when he’ll meet up with the rest of the boys, but if Piţurcă wanted him rested, that certainly seems to be happening. The question now won’t be rest but match fitness and form. The team has announced that they will be heading to Zurich on June 2nd, in preparation for the three group stage matches there, and hopefully a ticket on to either Basel or Vienna for the quarterfinals. There are a couple of minor obstacles in the way (France, Italy, and Holland) but it’s a funny old game, as defending champions Greece can tell you.

“Chocolate and candies” : Best lie of the week, hands down

By: Ian Rose | May 8th, 2008 | 2 Comments »

The Romanian Liga is over, and for the first time ever, CFR Cluj is champion of Romania. But as is often the case in Romania, things are not so simple. Corruption and bribing charges have now officially been filed by DNA, the national anti-corruption department. As a side note, I have no idea what it stands for, ... [read]

Frustration or motivation for disappointed Mutu?

By: Ian Rose | May 6th, 2008 | No Comments »

Adrian Mutu has had, by any footballing measure, a very bad week. First, he was again kept at bay by the solid defense of Rangers, and watched as his occasional strike partner Christian Vieri miss a penalty that took them out of the UEFA Cup. Then, in his third-to-last league match with the Viola, he was red-carded, leaving ... [read]

Oil index “How to win”: The offside issue and more

By: Ian Rose | May 5th, 2008 | No Comments »

The official, ahem, motor oil sponsor of Euro 2008, who also apparently fancy themselves statisticians, have released an instruction guide on how to win the tournament. I’m not going to go into it point-by-point, nor am I going to give my opinion on its validity, but it does raise a few points worthy of mention.
The first is offside calls. ... [read]

Mutu hopes to mimic United performance

By: Ian Rose | April 30th, 2008 | No Comments »

Fiorentina and Romania striker Adrian Mutu is all sorts of pumped up for tomorrow’s UEFA Cup semifinal with Rangers, calling it “the most important of our season so far.” Mutu and Viola strike partner Giampaolo Pazzini failed to do their part in Glasgow, and they return home to the Artemio Franchi on 0-0. Their situation is reminiscent of ... [read]

Romania thrash Russia + Player Ratings

By: Luc | March 26th, 2008 | 4 Comments »

Russia were greeted to an almost empty Ghencea for their international friendly against Euro 2008 hopefuls Romania. The match was to be the second meeting between the two sides in over 20 years. Russian coach Gus Hidding had called up a mostly internal league based squad and looked to the individualistic abilities of players such as Pavlachenko to give Russia ... [read]

Romania rolls Russia 3-0

By: Ian Rose | March 26th, 2008 | 2 Comments »

The Tricolorii came out today to make a statement, that even though they have been drawn with Italy, France and the Netherlands in Euro 2008’s group of death, they should not be overlooked. Up against fellow Euro 2008 entrant Russia today, they made that statement loud and clear. After a cagey first half, Ciprian Marica netted the first ... [read]

Full roster for Russia friendly

By: Ian Rose | March 25th, 2008 | No Comments »

The final squad list for tomorrow’s friendly with Russia has been released, and here it is. There aren’t many surprises, to me at least, on Victor Piturca’s 20-man roster. Marius Popa has earned his way into the backup keeper spot, for now at least, over Rapid Bucharest’s injured Dănuţ Coman, but Bogdan Lobonţ remains Romania’s #1. Dorin ... [read]

The rumors of Mutu’s fate have been greatly exaggerated

By: Ian Rose | March 22nd, 2008 | No Comments »

It’s four days until the Tricolorii of Romania take on Russia in the second friendly of the year, and one of the stars of Romania’s Euro 2008 qualifying run might be a little healthier than previously indicated. We knew, as of last week, that Adrian Mutu was cleared to play despite being left off of the initial roster due ... [read]
