the ongoing saga of Adrian Mutu

By now, if you’re like me, the on again, off again story of where Adrian Mutu will be playing next season is turning into one of those irritating rumour mills. Seemingly in a perfect playing environment at Fiorentina and well respected by management, the initial clatter of his movement seemed to be the typical ploy to garner a new contract. That situation seemed to be concluded as his agent, Alessandro Moggi, confirmed a new deal was close to signing. However just as the rumours dulled, not only was it revealed that Roma’s Francesco Totti had requested management to try and sign him, Christian Chivu his Tricolorii teammate, noted Adrian himself is interested in the possibility of playing for the Giallorossi.
So what is your opinion on this? Do you think a move to Roma would be a good situation for him or he should stay in Fiorentina?

All of this came up only because of the massive debt he supposedly (it’s gotten a little murky) owes Chelsea; Fiorentina have offered to break the salary cap for him and Frey and pay about €2 million/season, but they simply can’t pay him any more than that. It’d be good for Mutu and good for Fiorentina if he stayed, but the team would survive with out him (they were good when he was out for about a month last season after being injured against Roma, and have added a TON of talent since then), and if Roma are willing to pay the €20 million Fiorentina are asking, you can be sure they’ll spend that money well.

Mutu always switches clubs. I wish he would settle down somewhere.

Martha - do you think there is a reasonable chance he could end up at Roma? To me it just seems like an intelligent bargaining ploy.
Julien - yes, he does but I also think the same of many Footballers who have the opportunity to play in some of the worlds most beautiful cities. I’ve often sarcastically joked of how “difficult” it must be to play for Cagliari in Sardinia or how of Chievo and life in Verona to only name a few in Serie A - lol.

Fiorentina aren’t play hardball with him, they simply don’t have the money pay him more than €2 million/season (they’ve offered that, which is an increase of €500,000 over the old cap, to both Mutu and Frey; Frey’s taking it) — Mutu’s agent is pretty sleazy, but he ought to know that. Fiorentina have made their offer public, and have said since the beginning that if someone offers €20-25 million for Mutu, they’ll consider it. I think the only reason he’d go is if he really, truly is in a bad financial situation with this alleged Chelsea debt, because he has settled more in Florence than he has anywhere before, has a good understanding with the coach, and will probably be a captain this season if he stays.
(All of which is a long-winded way of saying yeah, I think he could leave.)

I actually meant he (or his agent) was creating the issue and playing a bit of hardball. And I tend to think all agents are a bit on a sleaze side to be honest. LOL…and yes, that is a long way to it is possible : )
How are you enjoying Nice - I have to go stop-by : )

I understand what you meant, sorry, my point was only that playing hardball to get more money out of Fiorentina is useless, because it won’t happen. They can’t and won’t pay him more than they’ve already offered — they have a long-term plan, and aren’t going to turn into Leeds just b/c they’re suddenly getting CL money. Negotiating with Roma to pressure Fiorentina is a waste of time.

I maybe wrong, but I was under the impression that Roma are having financial difficulty. Can they afford to sign Mutu?

He’d cost €20 million; I’m by no means a Roma authority, but from what I’ve read they could pay that, with the €13 million they just got from selling Mancini to Inter — for a while the deal was said to depend on that.
Now, though, Mutu’s making noises about wanting to stay @ Fiorentina for life; he’s said he wants to sit down and sign an extension as soon as the club president arrives @ training camp. We’ll see if he follows through on that, though.
